It was a historic stage win for Biniam Girmay yesterday on stage 10 of Giro d’Italia. 🚲 First African man to win a stage in one of the grand tours. Then, he injured his eye with the popping cork of a champagne bottle during award ceremony. Due to that injury he is abandoning the rest of the race. It is sad but also comical. In this stage, he rode 191 kms and won against all the competitors but, was taken out by a cork.

Jokes aside, I think this is just a beginning. We will see many more top cyclists coming to the world stage from Eritrea and rest of Africa. Just like how athletes from Africa have taken over Marathons over the last couple of decades, African athletes will excel in this form of endurance sport as well.
