It was supposed to be cloudy but it cleared up right after sunset and comet Tsushibchan-ATLAS made a surprising visit. Also found out that I can see it from my front yard without going to faraway places in search of western horizon.

Green comet

Comet C2022/E3 (ZTF) or the green comet as mentioned in the news was captured on the night of Friday (1/27) from my front yard. The relative movement of the comet over that time can be seen as the background stars made startrails.

In the second image, the processing was done a little differently to suppress the stars and that makes the comet's dust tail more prominent.

Comet Hale-Bopp

Almost 25 years to the day when I took this photo of comet Hale-Bopp at Princeton Battlefield park in Princeton, NJ. This was taken with a Pentax K1000 - 50mm lens and Kodak Gold 100 film.

I remember hiking in the Grand Canyon in following week and the comet looked so much brighter in dark skies out there.

Comet Neowise

It was really nice to have Comet Neowise stay around for a few weeks in Summer. There were many opportunities to view it without clouds or moon in the sky. Here are a couple more photos from July 2020.

This image was obtained by stacking 10 photos get more details in the twin tail of the comet.

Astrophotography in 2020

Last year turned out to be great for astrophotos. Due to the COVID pandemic, there was a lot more time available in the evenings with a significant drop in kids’ activities that require me to drive them around. I didn’t post these photos here so far but, am going to make a series of posts over the next few days with these pictures taken over the last year or so.

Starting with comet Neowise that was gracing the night skies in Summer. This photo was taken in the early morning before sunrise at Lake Pattagansett. It was a windless morning and I was able to get that perfect reflection of the comet in the lake.
