adit
My son starts the Spring semester of his freshman year at college today. Good to see that he is taking such diverse classes:
- Minimalism/postminimalism in music
- French
- Intro to Organic Chemistry
- Intro to Computer Science
V: Adit, please don’t scream and shout! Talk softly.
A: but why, mommy?
V: If you keep screaming and shouting, my ears will stop working properly. I won’t hear anything when you ask me for food or toys and other things.
A: well… You’ll just have to learn how to read my lips.
Man on the moon
Chat in the car this morning.
Adit: Where is the man on the moon? Me: There is no moon in the sky, so we can't see that man. Adit: Where is the moon? Me: Don't you remember that moon goes to bed in daytime and the Sun goes to bed in nighttime? Adit: Yes. But, I hope that man is not sleeping. Me: Why? Adit: If he sleeps then who will drive the moon? It will stay stuck.
Happy 3rd Birthday, Adit!!!
Adit turned 3 years old last Sunday. He is very happy to be a big boy now and so are we.
- Earlier this year, we were a little worried with Adit stuttering but, it turned out to be a normal step in growing up. His brain always runs a mile ahead of his tongue and he used to get stuck on his words. His brain is still keeping that lead but, his tongue doesn't get tangled up anymore. Because of his sister's influence, his vocabulary is growing at an amazing rate and we often find ourselves with raised eyebrows at words that he uses.
- Adit always has been a good eater and his love for food continues. V asked him: "What special thing do you want to do for your birthday?" and Adit's answer was, "I want to eat." He truly enjoys eating food and nothing can distract him when there is food on the plate in front of him. At each mealtime, he is finished with his plate as Ashwini crawls through about 25% of hers. Pasta still ranks as the most favorite food above everything else. He has been eating a lot more veggies than before. He also likes to eat spicy food. After finishing his dinner, he always wants to eat out of our plates and try new things. His favorite cookies are oreos and favorite fruit is banana.
- Reading books is not at the top of the list of favorite things but, Adit does like to read books. Just like Ashwini at his age, he has memorized many books and says the words looking at pictures on the page. Lately, he wants to read many of Dr. Seuss books.
- Other than the usual boy things such as running around, banging toys and throwing balls, solving jigsaw puzzles is his most favorite activity. He can put together upto 48 piece puzzles. It is very interesting to watch him hum some songs while focusing on solving these puzzles. I hope this will continue as he grows up.
- The biggest achievement for Adit over the last month or so is potty-training. Watching Ashwini at home and other kids in the daycare was a big factor in getting him to want to use the potty. We didn't try the child potty for him, he just uses the big one. We still have to remind him to go to the potty but, he is getting the hang of it and we haven't been blessed with a poopy diaper in a few weeks. The toilet paper usage around the house has grown exponentially. I am glad that I have been buying Procter and Gamble stock as a hedge against this increased expense.
- It took Adit almost 2 months to get used to his new daycare after moving there in September. But now, he is ready to take on the day as soon as he gets into the classroom. No more tears! Many a times, he doesn't even have time to say "bye bye" to us. He gets busy with other kids and/or some ongoing activities with teachers.
- Adit still likes to watch Dora, Diego, and the Backyardigans along with his old favorite Thomas the tank engine on TV. Just like his sister, he is still sheltered from Hollywood and Bollywood. He listens to some songs in the car during commute and has memorized words for many of them without understanding a word. Here is one example. Some kids at his daycare learned about Batman from their older siblings and Adit got it from them. He likes Batman without knowing anything about him or having watched him on TV. V got him this costume for Christmas. We'll probably use it for next Halloween.
Overall, Adit has had a great year and he is growing up very nicely. We want him to grow up and take on responsibilities such as changing his own clothes, brushing his teeth, putting away toys etc. But, at the same time, we don’t want him to grow up and lose his innocence. I am sure this is a dilemma that every parent faces. Unfortunately, there is no easy choice.
I be princess
Ashwini: When I grow up, I am going to be doctor and teacher. Adit: I grow up be princess. Ashwini: You can’t be a princess, Adit. Princesses are girls. Adit: I be princess. Ashwini: You can’t be a princess. You can be a prince. You are not a girl. Adit: Adit girl… Adit girl… I be princess.
Dang!!! The things I miss when I am away from home.
Adit on 11-29-07
When Adit wakes up in the morning, he calls out for either me or his Aai. He gets very upset if the parent he is not calling for, shows up to get him out of bed. We haven’t been able to figure out any pattern or reason why he chooses one of us. Yesterday was one of those days when he was calling for Aai when he woke up. When I went to get him, he started saying, “No, dada. Aai first. Aai first.” I tried telling him that Aai was not here and she was in India, but he kept repeating himself. Finally, he got out of the bed and went through all the bedrooms to make sure that she wasn’t hiding anywhere before agreeing to let me get him ready.
BTW, he says “eenda” for India. :)
It looks as if I forced him to sit on the horse to take the photo.
peek-a-BOO!
Yaaay!
While I was getting all depressed with all the life/work troubles, Adit made my day. It was his first no-cry drop-off at the daycare. He happily went to “Tate” and waved goodbye to me. Most excellent!!!
The beach
It is quite nice that we are about 2 miles from the beach and the ocean (actually, long island sound). Took the kids to the beach last week to just check out the place. Ashwini had been to a beach before, but it was the first time for Adit and he loved it. Initially, he was skeptical and didn’t want to even walk in the sand, but after a while it was hard to make him get out of the water. His most favorite activity was to pick up sand and throw it in the water. He was so wet and full of sand that I almost wanted to hose him in the yard before going inside the house. I can see us going there very often.
Ashwini happily splashed water on Adit to drive him out of there.
An afternoon at the zoo
Last weekend, we went to the Toledo Zoo. Thankfully, this is a small zoo as our kids last for about 2 hours before getting tired and cranky. We had enough time to view the seals and polar bears exhibit followed by a train ride through Africa and a couple of times on the merry-go-round. It is good to go to the zoo in the afternoon, about 2 hours before closing time. All the people are on their way home. So, the zoo is not crowded and also, great parking spots close to the entrance are available.
It was hard to pan properly with Adit hanging off one arm or pulling on my shirt or just trying to run around uncontrollably.
Ashwini wrote it all by herself, and look at that pretty flower she drew.
I hope to receive many many more such cards in the future. :)
Thanks to all of you who sent your wishes yesterday.
Playing in the backyard...
Don’t just stand there taking photos, put me in this swing!!!
By the way, Happy Birthday to V!!!
After a busy playday...
After running around in the yard all afternoon and getting wet while washing the cars, on a warm sunny spring day, everyone was just wiped out. Adit was busy gobbling up some snacks and Ashwini fell asleep in the couch while reading a book.
Adit was happy to see Ashwini asleep and got busy with those special books that she doesn’t let him touch.
Finally, he was overcome by fatigue too and wanted to nap next to his sister.

Saagar kinaare
- V's brother made a CD of assorted Hindi songs for her and it is being played in the car for some days. Ashwini listens and remembers these songs without understanding most of the words. It is funny how we catch her humming "saagar kinaare... dil ye pukaare... tu jo nahi to mera koi nahi hai" or "gore gore... o baake chhore... kabhi mere gali aaya karo" while coloring or solving jigsaw puzzles.
- We haven't seen any Hindi movies in a long long time. Lately, the rented movies come to our house, sit on the shelf for 2 weeks and go back to the store unwatched. Currently, Dhoom2 is gathering dust and awaiting its turn for a ride back to the store. It is just so hard to find time. We never ever watch any Hollywood or Bollywood movies with the kids around. They don't even get to watch SpongeBob or Tom&Jerry. Don't want them to be exposed to all the sex, violence and general bad behavior as long as possible. They'll have a lot of time to do that later on in life.
- Ashwini also hears and has learnt our marathi bovine words of endearment for Adit such as mhasoba, bail, mhasaroo, redkoo etc. It is funny to hear those come out of her mouth.
BTW, who is the male singer in “Saagar” songs? I thought it was Kishore Kumar, but that doesn’t sounds like him.
Happy 1.25th birthday, Adit!!!
Today, Adit is 15 months old.
Here is his monthly progress report. Although I have missed several months in between, I still call this a monthly report. I wish I was as punctual about these reports as I was with Ashwini.
Adit is still very smiley and loves to flash his teeth to anyone who talks with him. He has learnt to blow kisses and his daycare teachers just love that.
Adit likes to walk and run. I think, he learned to walk and run earlier than Ashwini. Sometimes, he doesn’t want to be carried. Especially at his daycare, he wants to walk between the car and his classroom. If he is walking without holding my hand, it is almost random brownian motion. He gets easily distracted by various things that are along the way and chance of him getting to his destination (actually, my intended destination for him) is close to nil.
He is more independent than Ashwini. While playing in the yard, Ashwini always stays around her parent, but Adit just walks away without any care. We’ll definitely need to keep a closer eye on him. He has started climbing stairs, too. He climbs into chairs and beds, but doesn’t know how to come down. He justs lunges down head first. Again, we need to keep a closer eye on him, if we want to avoid big bumps on his noggin.
Adit usually has no problem with eating food. Sometimes, we and his teachers have to stop him from eating too much. Another total opposite from Ashwini. He eats a variety of foods that include Gerber foods (vegetables), pasta, khichdi, cheese, yogurt, all kinds of fruits and yes, ice cream, too. These days, he likes things that he can chew on such as cookies, crackers, apple slices etc. He now has 7 teeth (4 on top and 3 on the bottom) and they came in a strange order that I had not seen before with any other kid.
Lately, Adit has taken a liking for books following his sister’s footsteps. He doesn’t want to put them in his mouth as he used to, but likes to turn pages and look at pictures. He likes to watch TV with Ashwini, too. It is funny to see him wave at the characters on TV when they say “hi” or “bye”. I think he likes to watch Thomas, Dora/Diego and Blue. Well, that is what he gets to watch, because his sister always chooses the shows. Adit also likes it when music is playing in the car. If he is cranky for some reason (mostly for locking him up in the carseat), turning the music on, makes him happy.
Adit can make some animal sounds. Sheep and snake are the only ones that make different sounds, but all the others say “boo” with different amount of emphasis on the “b” or different lenghts of the “oo” sound. He is very vocal when he wants to complain about something. Also, he throws things around or hits us when he gets upset. We should teach him some anger management tricks.
Some things that Adit has learnt at his daycare that he would have missed otherwise:
- Use of sign language to let us know if he wants more food or if he is all done.
- He picks up his cup or plate after he is done and takes it to the kitchen.
- When asked, he picks up books and toys to help clean-up.
Adit’s obsession with the trashcan still continues. These days, he doesn’t want to lick it anymore, but finds things to throw in it. We find all kinds of things such as pens, toys, milk bottles in the trashcan. If we can’t find something around the house, we just have to go to the trashcan to find it.
Adit is absolutely in love with Dora and his teacher, Megan. He doesn’t cry at drop-off time anymore. He just goes to Megan, gives her a hug and starts playing.
