Doodles

Ashwini has suddenly improved her sketching techniques. Till recently, the only thing she could draw intentionally was a straight line. We were amazed last week when she doodled these sketches on board right in front of our eyes. Here is a self-portrait…
Check out the same photo on Flickr with a legend for identifying body parts.
And, here is a portrait of me done by Ashwini.

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers

Continuing our Summer of concerts, we went to see Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, last night. It was at the DTE energy music theater, north of Detroit. It is an open-air theater and was great for a Rock&Roll concert on a Summer evening. Due to horrible road construction and traffic jams, by the time we reached the venue, we missed almost an hour of performance by the opening band, “The Black Crowes”. It seems that Tom Petty’s plane got delayed and he reached the venue with his band about half an hour after us. So, they started playing at 8:45 pm, right after getting out of their limo.

Tom Petty didn’t release any new music recently and so, was not promoting anything new. Within first hour and 15 minutes, we got to hear all the songs that we knew… breakdown, free fallin', won’t back down, mary jane’s last dance, etc. It was a lot of fun to hear them all live. While in graduate school, we used to call “won’t back down”, the PhD song.

Hey, baby. There ain’t no easy way out. Hey yeah, I will stand my ground. And I won’t back down.

Well I know what’s right I got just one life In a world that keeps on pushin' me around But I’ll stand my ground And I won’t back down.

At 10pm, we decided to leave the concert and head home to relieve our babysitter. Overall, it was a great concert. Looking forward to U2 in October.

Sunset on Jul 18, 2005.

Bunty aur Babli

If someone tells me that the producers of this movie bribed the news reporters to write good reviews, I would believe it in a heartbeat. How else could you explain such rave reviews for a movie that doesn’t deserve even 10% of the accolades?

The movie can be described by one marathi word: “AacharatpaNA”. I am unable to translate that in english. Someone (sampada, radhika74, on9thheaven, minn) please help. Update: According to the resident english scholar, Sampada, it is a ludicrous movie.

Starting the movie off with a useless song was not a good idea, at least according to me. Then, the hero of the movie insulting his father and telling him that his (father’s) life was not worth living, didn’t go very well with me, either. The story just didn’t go anywhere for a long time. They just keep fooling people with one trick after another. The only interesting one was the washing machine job. Selling Taj Mahal was a little too far fetched. We just couldn’t watch it after the drinking scene by Bachchans and I don’t think we missed anything. Don’t really care to know what happened in the end.

Amitabh Bachchan exemplified how to be obnoxious on screen. His performance was a perfect example of overacting. I hope he was doing it to help upcoming actors to learn what not to do. Rani Mukherji was a total miscast. She was good in Veer-Zaara. Rani should accept the fact that she is not Aishwarya Rai or one of those new svelte young actresses and continue to do roles like Veer-Zaara. If I want to see a flabby jiggly gut, I can look in the mirror.

Overall, I was quite disappointed with the movie.

Oh yeah, just remembered something… Every time Bunty & Babli were about to do a job, there was a ‘ttrrr  ttrrrr’ sound in the background. It was so annoying. First couple of times, I thought that a frog or some insect got into our house.

kabause

Our latest trick to get a quick laugh is to ask Ashwini a ‘why’ question….

V: Ashwini, why are your teeth so white? A: kabause, I brushed them.

Just like her other language quirks, this one will be gone soon too. We are enjoying it while we can.

RTM

Early this morning, I found V reading the manual for her new hair dryer. If Ashwini was around she would have asked the question that I didn’t dare to ask: “What is wrong with you, Aai???”

Golf...

My best performance of the season so far. 62 strokes on 9 holes, even after losing 3 balls. I got my first par on a par-5 hole. Quite happy about that.

A nice day at the lake

Ashwini's first camping trip

Last weekend, Ashwini went on her first ever camping trip. And, she absolutely loved it. I could see her disappointment, when I was taking down the tent on Sunday before coming back home. We went to Waterloo Recreation Area and had a campsite that was very close to the lake. So, this weekend, Ashwini really went to a beach and played a lot in the water. So, if she tells you about it, it is not a made-up story.

It is good to be in a stage when you know no fear.

After the swim, Ashwini spent some time on the beach drying off, eating a snack and of course, modeling.

It was a lot of fun to hang around the campsite. But, when the imperial troops attacked the park, our young jedi sprung into action.

Ashwini was very thrilled to sleep in the tent and to use the flashlights in the night. While planning, we were worried that she’ll make us come back home on the first night. But, she didn’t even talk about home or her room. From this experience, I think we’ll go out on more camping trips in the near and long-term future.

Happy 2.333rd Birthday, Ashwini!

If you come by our house these days in the evening, you’ll find Ashwini in this same pose. Recently, I bought a 2 liter container of soap solution for blowing bubbles. Hope it will last through this Summer.

  • Ashwini has been talking a lot. I am not sure how much of it she understands, but, she absorbs everything she hears like a sponge and repeats it just like a parrot. A couple of recent conversations:

Ashwini was eating lunch. I brought some milk for her in a sippy cup without the lid, the way she uses it at her daycare. A: Where is the cap, dada? What is wrong with you?

Ashwini was sitting at her ‘blowing bubbles’ spot, waiting for her Aai to come out. A: (screaming) Go away. Go away from me. V: (ran out to find A shouting at a tiny little spider) What happened, Ashwini? A: This spider is trying to get me.

While drifting off to sleep a few days ago…. A: I love Aai, I love Dada, I love Ashwini, I love Dashrathking, I love Shantanu, and I love Wam from Wamayend.

  • The second most favorite activity after blowing bubbles is watering plants. Our veggie garden is very happy to receive plenty of water everyday.
  • She is becoming more and more independent every day.
  • Ashwini is getting better with numbers and alphabets. She knows all the numbers (can count and shows correct number of fingers) and almost all the alphabets (capital letters only). She recognizes signs on the road and tells Aai which exit to take on the way home. "3 and 1, thirty one. Turn here, Aai". Always calls out stop signs. "Stop sign!!! stoppp and go".
  • She is getting good at spinning stories. Her daycare teacher wrote about Ashwini describing the 4th of July weekend at a beach, playing with a beach ball. In reality, we never went to a beach and we don't even have a beach ball. Today she was telling us that she ate 'spooky spider sandwich' for lunch.
  • Ashwini's current favorite story these days is 'chal re bhopalya tunook tunook'. (sorry! english translation is not possible.)
  • Her current favorite fruit is mangoes.

This list could just go on and on but, I should stop and keep some stuff for more posts.

Some new photos of Ashwini...

Long weekend

I am sure everyone in US has plans to do something over the 4th of July weekend. I always like to stay home over this long weekend.

Two reasons:

  1. It is usually hot like hell anyplace you go.
  2. It is so damned crowded anyplace you go.

I just can’t deal with the traffic jams on the roads and long lines and delays at the airports in this terrible heat.

I pity the poor souls who have made the wrong choice of going to Disneyland over this weekend.

Coool goooogle

Google at its best ever… Google Earth is ADDICTIVE. Adjusting tilt is just a little too much. It feels like playing a video game with an unlimited terrain.

Update: Sorry!!! Put the wrong link. Now it is corrected.

Typical day...

A typical day in Ashwini’s life:

7:00amwake up, get ready, some breakfast
7:40am leave home for daycare
8:00am breakfast at daycare
8:30am playtime i.e. read books, painting/art projects, etc.
10:00am morning snack
10:15am more playtime i.e. going outside on the slides, swings, sand box, etc.
11:45am lunch
12:45pm naptime
3:30pm afternoon snack
4:00pm play outside
5:00pm leave for home
5:30pm help(!?) Aai with making dinner
6:15pm dinner
7:00pm playtime i.e. watering plants in the garden, swingset, just running around.
8:30pm bath & getting ready for bed
9:00pm reading stories in bed and drifting off to sleep.

At the end of every day, I think about what Ashwini did and become very jealous. Sure, I have my freedoms, and get to make my own decisions and don’t have to wear diapers. But, still her life seems more attractive than my own.

Please leave a one-word comment that you think best describes me.

It can only be one word; no more.

two day stubble

This has always bugged me…. What do women find attractive in a man with a two day old stubble? I can understand liking a fully grown proper beard or a clean cut smooth face. But, what is it about this I-am-too-lazy-or-too-stupid-to-shave look?

Crappiest movie ever

Yesterday, I watched one of the most crappiest Hindi movies ever, on AZN masala weekend. My brother was visiting for the weekend and we had a blast watching it together. Missed the beginning and hence don’t know the title. But, the movie was so bad that I want to know the title. I tried searching on Google and on IMDB but, no success. If anyone knows the title please let me know.

Here are some clues… Raj Babbar was the villain, Kalicharan, the underworld boss. Dharmendra was the police commissioner who was fighting the underworld. His sister and brother-in-law (journalist) were killed by Kalicharan. So, it is a personal fight. A witness to the murder, Deepa, was the heroin of the movie. (We couldn’t identify the actress; seemed like she was from south Indian film industry) She was good with martial arts and did a lot of action. In stead of killing her off, the villains get her trapped in some silly plot and send her off to jail. She gets martial arts training in the jail. Dharmendra believes her story and helps her get paroled. Then, uses her as a deadly weapon to get to the bad guys. Aditya Pancholi made a guest appearance. Other names for guest appearances were Ayub Khan and Simran. These were shown in the end. Everything about this movie was bad: story, dialogues, acting, editing, songs, everything.

We had a huge laugh about the last frame of the movie which read “Remember, it was a K.C. Bokadia production”. Almost a warning… Don’t watch any more of K.C. Bokadia’s movies in the future.

Again, if anyone knows the title of this movie, I’d like to know.

Update: The title of the movie was “Gundagardi”. Please don’t watch it even if your life depends on it.

It was the first visit of the year to the emergency room for Ashwini. We came home from daycare and after getting out of the car she wanted to sit in the dirt on garage floor and I was trying to stop her from that by lifting her up by her arms. She started crying and didn’t want to move her left arm away from her body. I knew what had happened. Her elbow got dislocated. It is supposedly very common for children her age. We rushed her to the ER. Thankfully, didn’t have to wait for too long. A doctor came to see us, talked with Ashwini to distract her and fixed her arm with a snap. She was very pleased with that doctorkaka who miraculously fixed her arm.

Note to self: Don’t pick Ashwini up with her arms. Hold her under her arms, always!

I should have posted this last week, as this happened on last Thursday.

Book tag

Finally, a meme about books that has been making circles in the blog world. Although I love to collect and read books, my book-reading habits have changed in last 2 years or so. 90% of the books that I read these days are children’s books. Hence, I am going to answer this questionnaire from my daughter’s perspective.

Total number of books I own: I have probably a hundred books and I am just two and a quarter years old. The picture above shows just a part of my collection. I love my books and I never ever tear them.

Last book I bought: Inch by Inch by Leo Lionni. The star of the book is an inchworm that can measure anything. A good story to learn the concept of measuring. This same author also wrote Swimmy.

Last book I read: Last night, I read The Three bears by Byron Barton (Illustrator), for the seven millionth time. I know the whole book by heart and can read it to you even though I don’t know all my alphabets yet.

Five Books That Mean a Lot to Me: (today’s opinion)

  1. The very hungry caterpillar by Eric Carle: This was the first book I ever laid my eyes on and I am still in love with that adorable caterpillar. This book has very colorful drawings of all my favorite fruits and a lollipop. It also got me started with counting and learning numbers. I have almost all the books written by Eric Carle and I like them all.
  2. We're Going on a Bear Hunt by Helen Oxenbury (Illustrator), Michael Rosen: It is a wonderfully illustrated book and the story is well written to sing along. The kids along with their father go out to hunt a bear. But, when they see one, they get scared and run back home.
  3. Owl Babies by MARTIN WADDELL, PATRICK BENSON (Illustrator): This is one of the most beautifully illustrated book. The owl babies seem so fluffy and real. Their faces show anxiety, sadness and joy very well. I like the story too.
  4. Hop on Pop by Dr. Seuss: I like the way this book has simple rhyming words. It is helping me learn how to read. I really liked the last word of the book: "seehemewe patpuppop hethreetreebee tophopstop". This is also President Bush's favorite book. After reading this book, I have learnt to hop on my dad's tummy and give him some exercise.
  5. The Going to Bed Book by Sandra Boynton: This is a very nice book that helps me learn all the things to do while getting ready for bed: taking a bath, brushing teeth, finding pajamas, finally turning off the light and say good night. I have most of Sandra Boynton's books. 'Hey! wake up' shows me all the things to do in the morning when I wake up. 'Moo Baa la' was my favorite when I was little. 'Doggies' teaches me how to count and 'A to Z' has all the alphabets.
